Syklo opens €80m circular economy hub in Finland to targets global plastics market

Finnish recycling company Syklo has opened a €70–80 million circular economy hub in Hyvinkää, bringing together the country’s largest plastic recycling plant and an industrial-scale biocomposite facility.
 
The facility, officially opened on 9 September, can process 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year—material that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. Syklo says the plant will increase Finland’s plastic recycling capacity by 50% and cut calculated greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.
 
The company is positioning the site as a major step in turning Finnish recycling expertise into an export business.

Syklo’s recycling operation is built around intensive sorting and refining, supported by a closed-loop water system. Its sorting process uses patented technology from Scottish company Impact Recycling, capable of separating black plastics based on small differences in density—an established challenge for the industry.

The result is Sykloplast, a recycled plastic pellet designed to deliver consistent quality and technical performance in applications where recycled plastics have traditionally struggled to meet requirements.
 
Alongside the recycling plant, Syklo is operating an industrial-scale biocomposite facility based on its own patented wet-web technology. The process preserves the length of cellulose fibres, improving the strength of the resulting material while operating with a closed water circuit.
 
The resulting Syklocomp biocomposite is designed as an alternative to glass fibre, talc and technical plastics in packaging, electronics and transport equipment. Initial production capacity is 8,000 tonnes a year.
 
The two operations are closely integrated. Recycled Sykloplast pellets produced at the site become a direct raw material for the neighbouring biocomposite plant, reducing transport requirements and supporting consistent material quality.
 
The hub is also expected to create more than 100 jobs in Hyvinkää, ranging from laboratory technicians to process workers. The plants will operate around the clock in three shifts.
 
The opening comes as Syklo moves into a potentially significant international test.
 
Syklocomp, produced in Hyvinkää, has been selected from hundreds of applicants for the 2026 Amazon Devices Climate Tech Accelerator. The programme will evaluate whether Syklo’s material could be used in Amazon devices and their manufacturing processes.
 
The assessment will focus on the material’s processing performance, mechanical properties and the ability to supply it reliably at industrial scale.
 
For Syklo, the combination of a fully operational production hub and evaluation by a global technology company marks a step beyond recycling: the company is seeking a role in global manufacturing supply chains.
