Clariant, the sustainability-focused specialty chemical firm, announced that it has been hit with two claims for damages in Munich, Germany. 

 

The claims—filed by MOL Petrolkémia Zrt. and Slovnaft a.s. (MOL Group) of Hungary, and Braskem S.A. of Brazil—target four companies, including Clariant, over alleged competition law breaches in the ethylene purchasing market.

 

The lawsuits seek damages totaling roughly €548 million and €402 million, tied to a European Commission sanction issued in July 2020.

 

Clariant pushed back firmly. “Clariant firmly rejects the allegations and will adamantly defend its position in the proceedings,” the company said.

 

Clariant added that it has provided economic evidence demonstrating that “the conduct of the parties did not produce any effect on the market.”
