Clariant has substantiated economic evidence that the conduct of the parties did not produce any effect on the market
Clariant has officially rejected a €1.1 billion ($1.26 billion) damages claim filed by Dow Europe regarding an antitrust infringement from 2020. The Swiss specialty chemical maker announced on July 17, 2026, that it received the lawsuit on July 16, 2026, via the district court of Dortmund, Germany. The legal action names four companies altogether, including Clariant.
The claim alleges damages amounting to around €1.1 billion in relation to infringement of competition law on the ethylene purchasing market which was sanctioned by the European Commission in July 2020.
Clariant firmly rejects the allegation and will adamantly defend its position in the proceedings. Clariant has substantiated economic evidence that the conduct of the parties did not produce any effect on the market.
Dow Europe alleged that anti-competitive purchasing practices artificially depressed market prices for ethylene, leading to significant financial losses for its European segment.
