Metacon’s wholly owned Greek subsidiary, Metacon, has secured €241,920 in EU project funding to develop and demonstrate hydrogen production from biomethane in Greece, advancing efforts to bring its proprietary reforming technology closer to commercial deployment.

The funding will support the BIOH2VAP project, which will establish a pilot plant at an existing industrial biogas facility in Ierapetra, Crete. The project will demonstrate the conversion of locally produced biomethane into renewable hydrogen and assess the technology’s technical performance, operating efficiency and commercial potential under real industrial conditions.

Metacon SA’s total project budget stands at €302,400, with public funding covering €241,920.

The pilot plant will cover biogas upgrading, biomethane production and reforming-based hydrogen generation. Data gathered during industrial operations will be used to evaluate and refine the technology ahead of potential commercial deployment.

The project also aims to demonstrate how hydrogen production can be integrated into existing biogas infrastructure and make use of local residue streams, improving resource efficiency and strengthening the commercial case for circular hydrogen production.

For Metacon, BIOH2VAP represents another step towards commercialising its proprietary reforming technology and expanding hydrogen production solutions based on renewable feedstocks.

"The BIOH2VAP project gives us a new industrial platform to demonstrate clean hydrogen production from biomethane and optimise its commercial potential. It expands our industrial testing base for our reforming technology and will support our commercialisation plans targeting future deployment at thousands of existing places internationally where biogas infrastructure and local renewables are already available," says Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon.
