Japanese materials giant Sumitomo Bakelite has completed the acquisition of a Kyocera chemical business, expanding its semiconductor materials portfolio and sharpening its focus on the fast-growing AI data centre market.

The acquired business began operations as Sumitomo Bakelite Chemical Solution Co., following the completion of the transaction.

The deal covers key businesses within Kyocera’s chemical operations, including semiconductor encapsulation epoxy molding compounds, semiconductor bonding paste and industrial resins. These businesses were transferred to a newly established Kyocera entity through an absorption-type company split before Sumitomo Bakelite acquired all its shares.

The acquisition is part of Sumitomo Bakelite’s broader strategy to transform and expand its business portfolio under its Medium-Term Management Plan 2024–26.

By integrating the acquired company into its group, Sumitomo Bakelite aims to reinforce its technological capabilities, strengthen its ICT business and accelerate the development of high-value-added products.

A key focus will be combining its existing expertise in semiconductor encapsulation epoxy molding compounds and semiconductor bonding paste with the acquired company's proprietary technologies.

The combined capabilities are expected to help the company address a wider range of customer requirements, particularly in emerging applications linked to AI data centres — a market projected to see significant growth.

The acquisition represents another step in Sumitomo Bakelite’s long-term growth strategy, with the company seeking to capitalise on rising demand for advanced semiconductor materials and technologies.

The company said the transaction would accelerate progress towards its Vision for 2030 and strengthen its contribution to society as a company that “brings dreams to the future.”
