BASF Coatings has launched a new digital solution that calculates the carbon footprint of its entire sales portfolio, replacing a legacy in-house application used for years to provide reliable CO2 data to customers worldwide.

The new platform offers agile, real-time, auditable, and globally consistent CO2 data for 120,000 products.

From raw material procurement and transport to production energy use, all greenhouse gas emissions are now tracked uniformly and systemically—providing traceable CO2 accounting even for complex, multi-variant products such as paints in multiple colors. The data equips customers with a solid factual basis to meet their sustainability goals.

“For our customers, climate protection is becoming ever more important. With our tools, we can provide them with reliable data and, on that basis, support them with solutions,” said Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Global Sustainability at BASF Coatings.

“Today, for example, we already offer customers the possibility to reduce the CO2 footprint of selected products through the use of alternative raw materials and renewable energy.”

At the heart of the new Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) tool is a database of CO2 information for more than 25,000 globally sourced raw materials.

The platform also incorporates energy data from over 30 BASF Coatings production sites, enabling precise emission tracking even for product variants. Beyond CO2, the tool includes additional impact categories, providing deeper insights for developing solutions that enhance customer sustainability.

The rollout of the system was carried out globally in close collaboration with SAP, marking BASF Coatings as the first and largest surface solutions provider to adopt SAP Sustainability Footprint Management (SFM).

“By introducing SFM, we bring together sustainability and digitization and create reliable transparency for us and our customers,” said Maximilian Bauer, Technical Project Manager Global Sustainability at BASF Coatings.
