Global chemicals giant BASF is expanding its certified biomass-balanced polyarylethersulfone lineup with Ultrason P 3010 BMB, a polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) containing 20% bio-circular feedstock.

The move targets industries ranging from household and catering to medical technology, water and sanitary systems, hydrogen production, and E&E, offering companies a chance to accelerate their circular economy goals.

“This addition helps customers achieve their sustainability goals without compromising on the material’s performance, its quality, or the need for investments in new machinery,” BASF notes.

The new BMB grade replaces a portion of fossil raw materials with renewable feedstock sourced from organic waste and residual biomass. Certified under ISCC PLUS via a mass balance approach, production also leverages 100% green electricity at BASF’s Ludwigshafen, Germany plant.

The result: a drop-in solution that is chemically identical to standard Ultrason P 3010, requiring no re-qualification or process changes.

“With Ultrason P 3010 BMB, we are helping customers advance their green transformation at an early stage of their sustainability journey,” says Nami Lohbeck from global business management Ultrason at BASF.

“By choosing Ultrason P 3010 BMB, customers can contribute to the substitution of fossil resources, increase the use of renewable raw materials, and differentiate their products from the competition through added sustainability benefits.”

Like its conventional counterpart, Ultrason P 3010 BMB maintains high-temperature stability, chemical resistance, toughness, and long-term durability, making it suitable for critical applications like baby bottles, drinking water components, and medical devices. BASF pioneered this approach in 2025 with Ultrason E 2010 BMB, the first biomass-balanced polyethersulfone containing 39% bio-circular feedstock.

Ultrason products—covering polyethersulfone (Ultrason E), polysulfone (Ultrason S), and polyphenylsulfone (Ultrason P)—are high-performance thermoplastics used in water filtration membranes, durable household applications, and lightweight automotive and aerospace components. They can even replace thermosets, metals, glass, and ceramics thanks to their exceptional properties.
