Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and the Centre for Science & Environment (CSE) have joined hands to explore and develop solutions in biofuels, biomass utilization, waste-to-resource management and the circular economy.

 

This, as India steps up efforts to build cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

 

The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently to identify opportunities across the biofuels value chain, with a particular focus on Compressed Biogas (CBG).

 

The partnership will cover feedstock assessment and supply-chain development, biomass and waste-resource management, by-product utilization, technology assessment, pilot and demonstration projects, market development, capacity building and knowledge sharing.

 

The collaboration brings together BPCL’s expanding biofuels portfolio and industrial execution capabilities with CSE’s expertise in research, policy advocacy, waste management and sustainable development. The two organisations aim to use these complementary strengths to develop bioenergy solutions that can be scaled across India.

 

The MoU also provides for exploring the assessment and utilization of biofuel by-products, including Fermented Organic Manure (FOM), digestate, Bio-CO and DDGS. The partnership will also examine opportunities to build sustainable value chains and tap potential carbon-credit opportunities linked to bioenergy projects.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Subhankar Sen Director (Marketing), BPCL mentioned, "This close collaboration with CSE represents a defining moment in our organizations life cycle. We are entering an era where organizational success is defined by collaboration and partnerships—combining our strengths to achieve what neither could do alone."

 

Director General, CSE added, "I am highly confident that we will leverage our respective strengths. While CSE brings its deep expertise in working with municipalities and understanding the Compressed Biogas (CBG) ecosystem, BPCL brings the industrial capability and execution strength to scale these solutions."

 

The MoU establishes a broad framework for cooperation and knowledge exchange. Individual projects will be taken up through separate agreements, where mutually agreed, with specific provisions covering scope, responsibilities and implementation mechanisms.
