The facility has already produced its first captured carbon dioxide
Carbon Clean has commissioned a 2-tonne-per-day (TPD) carbon capture pilot plant at its Global Innovation Centre (GIC) in Navi Mumbai, marking a significant step in its efforts to accelerate the development and commercialisation of next-generation carbon capture technologies.
The facility has already produced its first captured carbon dioxide (CO₂), enabling the company to test and validate solvents, processes and carbon capture technologies before commercial deployment.
The commissioning comes as Carbon Clean joins the business delegation accompanying UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds on his official visit to India, underscoring growing UK-India cooperation in clean energy, industrial decarbonisation and advanced manufacturing.
Aniruddha Sharma, Co-Founder and CEO of Carbon Clean, said: "It is a privilege for Carbon Clean to be part of the Secretary of State’s business delegation to India and to represent the UK’s world-leading clean tech sector.
“Commissioning this pilot plant significantly strengthens our ability to develop, test and scale the next generation of carbon capture technology. It also demonstrates the two-way value of the UK-India relationship.
"Commercialisation in partnership with Indian customers and market development at our Global Innovation Centre in Navi Mumbai strengthens UK intellectual property and advanced manufacturing, supporting skilled jobs and economic growth as we scale globally.”
UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds said: "Carbon Clean is a great example of the innovation and expertise we have here in the UK being put to work on some of the biggest challenges facing the world.
"Its partnership with Indian businesses shows how British ingenuity can help cut emissions, create opportunities and support cleaner growth both at home and abroad."
The new pilot plant is designed to replicate flue gas conditions across a range of industrial applications, allowing Carbon Clean to test both conventional packed-bed and rotating packed-bed carbon capture technologies.
The flexible facility forms part of the GIC’s integrated research and development infrastructure, bridging the gap between laboratory development and pilot-scale validation.
The commissioning builds on Carbon Clean’s investment in innovation across the UK and India, with its expansion forecast to support more than 150 high-skilled jobs in the UK by 2030. Its UK supply chain already comprises 24 companies that collectively employ more than 3,000 people.
Opened in July 2025, the 77,121-square-foot GIC is one of the world’s largest dedicated carbon capture research facilities. It integrates solvent development, analytical testing, process development and pilot-scale validation under one roof, with the aim of accelerating the development and commercialisation of carbon capture technologies.
The latest milestone strengthens the centre’s role in advancing technologies towards commercial deployment, while reinforcing the industrial and economic links between the UK and India.
