Celanese and Siegwerk have launched a collaboration aimed at cutting fossil-based inputs in the printing ink supply chain, using bio-based ethyl acetate as a key ingredient.

The companies say Celanese is supplying ethyl acetate with 50% bio-based content, designed as a drop-in replacement for conventional fossil-derived solvents.

The material is already being integrated by Siegwerk into existing ink formulations, allowing a shift toward lower-carbon products without altering manufacturing processes or compromising performance.

“The partnership with Celanese directly aligns with Siegwerk’s SustainUP program, our global sustainable procurement initiative, which is a key pillar of HorizonNOW 2030 – Siegwerk’s overarching sustainability strategy,” said Cathleen Hansohm, Global Supplier Sustainability Manager.

“The use of a 50% bio-content ethyl acetate supports our ambition to expand the use of renewable feedstocks in a responsible and scalable way.”

On the supplier side, Celanese framed the collaboration as part of a broader push for practical decarbonization across industrial value chains.

“Collaboration is key to driving meaningful progress toward sustainability,” said Kevin Norfleet, Senior Director, Sustainability, at Celanese. “By working closely with Siegwerk, Celanese contributes to solutions that reduce the use of fossil resources while maintaining the high performance standards required in demanding applications such as printing inks.”

Both companies positioned the initiative as a scalable step toward more sustainable packaging, emphasizing that the solution is designed for immediate industrial adoption rather than future conceptual development.

Celanese, a Fortune 500 chemicals group with more than 11,000 employees, continues to expand its portfolio of sustainable materials across global industries.

Siegwerk, a 200-year-old family-owned ink specialist, says it is accelerating circular packaging efforts under its “rethINK packaging” strategy, supported by operations in more than 30 countries.
