New design conserves resources, enhances recyclability, and lowers CO₂ emissions

Evonik has introduced a more environmentally friendly 25-kilogram paper bag for MetAMINO (DL-methionine) by removing the plastic film layer. This packaging innovation offers customers easier disposal and supports compliance with the EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which promotes improved recyclability and sustainability across the value chain.

The new packaging features a two-layer paper design and is classified as PAP 22 under the EU recycling system, allowing for easy recycling as a pure paper bag. At the Antwerp production site alone, this change will eliminate 32 tons of polyethylene (PE) annually and reduce the packaging’s CO₂ footprint by 20%. Extensive testing has confirmed that the high quality of MetAMINO remains unchanged, with the product’s 36-month shelf life fully maintained in the new packaging.

“Product packaging plays a vital role in our efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions and support a resource-efficient circular economy,” says Dr. Dirk Hoehler, Head of the Amino Acids Business at Evonik Animal Nutrition. “While packaging must effectively protect the product, it should do so in the most environmentally responsible way possible.”
