This certification marks a significant step forward in India’s capability to produce, certify, and distribute sustainable aviation fuels
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) has become the first company in India to receive the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) under CORSIA for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production at its Panipat Refinery. This certification, a prerequisite for commercial SAF production, marks a significant step forward in India’s capability to produce, certify, and distribute sustainable aviation fuels in line with global standards.
The certification was formally handed over by Cotecna to A. S. Sahney, Chairman, IndianOil, during a ceremony in New Delhi. The event was attended by dignitaries including Rohit Mathur, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG), Maneesh Kumar, Joint Director General, DGCA, and senior officials from MoP&NG, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB).
Speaking on the occasion, Sahney lauded the collaborative efforts of MoP&NG, DGCA, NABCB, MoCA, and Cotecna, which helped align India’s regulatory and production frameworks with international best practices in green aviation.
The ISCC CORSIA certification, developed under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), validates that SAF meets the highest sustainability standards and lifecycle carbon emission benchmarks. SAF produced at IndianOil’s Panipat Refinery has undergone rigorous assessment for lifecycle carbon emissions and traceability, providing a clear pathway for Indian airlines to integrate certified SAF into their operations.
