India's bioenergy expo closes with Rs. 15,000 cr investment MoU as UP emerges new bioenergy hub

 

The three-day India Bioenergy & Tech Expo (IBET) wrapped up with investment commitments and MoUs worth Rs. 15,000 crore, signalling strong investor confidence and cementing Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as a major green-energy investment hub.

 

Organised by the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) in partnership with UP New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), the expo underscored the sector’s growing importance to India’s clean-energy transition, rural economic growth and long-term energy security.

 

The expo brought together policymakers, investors, technology companies, entrepreneurs and industry experts to explore opportunities spanning compressed biogas (CBG), ethanol, biomass, biodiesel, bio-mobility, biomaterials and sustainable aviation fuel.

 

The final day put farmers at the centre of the bioenergy conversation, with a special session titled “Fuelling Green Energy and Income Opportunities for Farmers”. Policymakers, industry leaders, technology providers and other stakeholders discussed ways to turn agricultural residues into clean energy while opening new revenue streams for farmers.

 

The session highlighted the need for stronger feedstock supply chains, tighter farmer-industry linkages and commercially viable rural business models to unlock the full potential of bioenergy.

 

The first two days featured high-level deliberations on India’s bioenergy roadmap, Uttar Pradesh’s growing role as an investment hub and the potential of CBG to turn agricultural waste into wealth.

 

AK Sharma, Minister for Energy & Additional Sources of Energy, Government of Uttar Pradesh; Surya Pratap Shahi, Minister for Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh; and Kailash Singh Rajput, Minister of State for Energy and Additional Sources of Energy, Government of Uttar Pradesh, joined senior officials from the Central and State governments at the three-day event.

 

Sharma underlined the potential of CBG to boost farmers’ incomes, generate employment in villages and transform agricultural waste into productive economic assets. The Uttar Pradesh government also reiterated its support for entrepreneurs investing in the bioenergy sector.

 

Shahi said around Rs. 3,500 crore has already been invested in Uttar Pradesh’s CBG sector, generating nearly 25,000 jobs, while another 70–80 plants are expected to come up in the state.

 

Sanjay Ganjoo, Director General, Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE), said: “India’s bioenergy opportunity is moving from policy ambition to a real investment and enterprise opportunity. 

 

"The next phase will be about scaling projects, strengthening feedstock supply chains, bringing farmers into the value chain and creating bankable business models. With the right policy support, technology and industry participation, bioenergy can simultaneously advance India’s energy security, reduce waste, create rural employment and provide an additional source of income for farmers. IBET 2026 has demonstrated that the ecosystem is ready to move decisively in this direction.”
