In a significant move to advance awareness and understanding of next-generation coal technologies, Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has inaugurated a Working Display Model on Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) and its downstream utilization.

The model highlights the potential of the technology to transform India's energy future.

The display model was inaugurated by Satish Jha, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), ECL, in the presence of Gunjan Kumar Sinha, Director (HR), ECL, along with senior officials, departmental heads and employees.

Developed as an educational and demonstration platform, the model showcases the scientific principles, operational processes and future applications of Underground Coal Gasification technology, which is currently being implemented as a pioneering pilot project at the Kasta West Coal Block in Jharkhand.

Addressing the gathering, Satish Jha underscored the strategic significance of UCG for India's long-term energy security.

"Underground Coal Gasification represents the future of sustainable coal utilization in India. The technology has the potential to unlock vast deep-seated coal reserves that are presently inaccessible through conventional mining methods. As the nation moves towards greater energy security and self-reliance, UCG can play a transformative role by converting untapped coal resources into valuable energy and industrial feedstock."

Highlighting the wider implications of the technology, he added: "The successful implementation of the ongoing UCG pilot project will open new avenues for clean and efficient utilization of India's abundant coal resources.

"It can significantly contribute to power generation, fertilizer production, chemical manufacturing, synthetic fuels, and future hydrogen economy initiatives, thereby supporting the country's long-term energy and industrial growth."

The working model offers a detailed visual representation of the entire UCG value chain—from underground coal gasification and syngas generation to a range of downstream industrial applications.

It also demonstrates key environmental and operational benefits of the technology, including minimal surface disturbance, reduced occupational risks and efficient extraction of deep coal reserves that are otherwise difficult to mine.

Coal India Limited's flagship research and development initiative on Underground Coal Gasification is being jointly implemented by ECL and CMPDI, with technical support from ERGO Exergy Technologies Inc., Canada. The project seeks to establish the techno-economic viability of UCG under Indian geo-mining conditions and lay the groundwork for future commercial-scale deployment.

The inauguration marks another step in ECL's drive towards innovation, technological modernization and sustainable resource utilization.

The company expects the display model to serve as a valuable knowledge-sharing platform for employees, researchers, policymakers and industry stakeholders exploring the future of clean coal and advanced energy technologies.
