GEH selects Worley to fabricate key system for small modular nuclear reactor

Worley Chemetics will fabricate the isolation condenser system at Worley’s newly expanded, alloy fabrication facility in Pickering, Canada

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has selected Worley Chemetics to join the BWRX-300 Qualified Supplier Group. Worley Chemetics will be the design and fabrication supplier for the isolation condenser system for the BWRX-300 small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) to support the first grid scale SMR in North America.

The isolation condenser system is specialized equipment and is a key passive safety feature of the BWRX-300 SMR design. As a member of the Qualified Supplier Group, Worley Chemetics will produce a prototype for testing and then fabricate the isolation condenser systems. Worley categorizes the services under this strategic supply relationship as sustainable work.

GEH states that the BWRX-300 SMR supports decarbonization efforts by delivering clean, reliable power to the grid. In addition to supplying electricity to the grid, GEH also states that the BWRX-300 has the capability to supply electricity and/or steam for process heat applications, district heating and hydrogen production.

Worley Chemetics will fabricate the isolation condenser system at Worley’s newly expanded, alloy fabrication facility in Pickering, Canada, which specializes in alloy vessels, reactors, and heat exchangers for the chemical process and nuclear sectors, and equipment that requires world-class capabilities and high standards for quality, metallurgy, corrosion science, and specialized welding techniques.
