Saipem has secured a contract from renewable synthetic fuel producer Synhelion AG to carry out pre-FEED activities for a new commercial-scale synthetic fuel plant in Hürth, Germany.

 

The planned facility, to be located at RWE’s Chemiepark Knapsack site, is expected to produce around 30,000 tonnes of RED-compliant renewable synthetic fuels annually, with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as the primary output. The plant will also produce synthetic diesel and gasoline for the aviation, maritime and road transport sectors.

 

Under the contract, Saipem will deliver a multidisciplinary pre-FEED engineering package defining the plant’s overall configuration. The work will integrate Synhelion’s proprietary technology with fuel synthesis and upgrading processes, as well as infrastructure to be provided by RWE.

 

The engineering package will serve as a critical technical foundation for the project’s permitting process and subsequent FEED phase, as well as the future Final Investment Decision (FID).

 

The contract strengthens Saipem’s position in the development of complex industrial facilities focused on the production of sustainable fuels, as demand grows for lower-carbon alternatives across the transport sector.
