Overview

The Indian agrochemicals industry is a critical pillar of the agricultural sector, which employs over 50% of India's workforce and contributes approximately 16.7% to the country's GDP. The industr y is pivotal in enhancing crop productivity and ensuring food security for India's 1.4 billion population.

Indian agrochemicals market was valued at approximately US$10.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$14.5 billion by FY28, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9%. Exports have been a significant growth driver, reaching US$5.5 billion in FY23, with a CAGR of 14% from FY19 to FY23, surpassing the United Statesto make India the second-largestagrochemical exporter globally. Projections indicate exports could exceed Rs. 80,000 crore (approximately US$10 billion) in the next four years.

Currently, around 15–25% of India's crop yield is lost to pests, weeds, and diseases, underscoring the critical role of agrochemicals in crop protection.

There is enough space for growth for the industry as domestic consumption remains low at 0.6 kg per hectare as compared to the global average of 2.4 kg/ha. Moreover, India imports nearly 50% of its technical-grade agrochemical requirements, primarily from China.

The Indian agrochemicals industry is poised for significant growth, driven by favorable policies, export potential, and innovation. However, addressing regulatory, environmental, and supply chain challenges will be crucial to sustaining this trajectory. India needs to increase investment in R&D focuses on developing new molecules, green chemistry, and biopesticides. Adoption of precision agriculture, drone-based spraying, and digital technologies enhances e

With strategic reforms and a focus on sustainability, India has the potential to emerge as a global leader in agrochemicals, contributing to both food security and economic growth.
