The funding will cover 75% of the project’s estimated C$48 million cost
Canadian lithium developer E3 Lithium has received conditional approval for up to C$36.5 million in non-repayable federal funding, a major boost aimed at accelerating development of its Clearwater Project in Alberta.
The funding, awarded through the Government of Canada’s Global Partnerships Initiative (GPI), will cover 75% of the project’s estimated C$48 million cost. The money will be used to advance Phase 3 of E3’s Demonstration Facility and complete the Clearwater Project Feasibility Study.
Under the plan, E3 will expand the scope of its demonstration facility east of Olds, Alberta, installing a full-sized commercial lithium extraction column capable of producing the carbonate equivalent of 100 tonnes per year of lithium chloride. The project will also support Front End Engineering Design (FEED) work and add 25 new full-time technical jobs.
The expanded facility will allow the company to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate at a larger scale, while validating its Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology using a full commercial-scale column. The work is intended to de-risk the technology and move the Clearwater project toward a Final Investment Decision (FID), supported by a Class 3 cost estimate.
The initiative highlights Canada’s growing focus on building secure supply chains for critical minerals used in batteries, energy storage and defence technologies. E3 is working on the project alongside Axens Group, a France-based clean energy technology provider, and ABB, the Switzerland-headquartered electrification and automation firm.
The federal funding remains conditional on due diligence and the signing of a contribution agreement.
“Canada is putting real capital behind the secure and reliable critical mineral supply chains that our economies and defence industries rely on,” said the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. “By supporting companies like E3 Lithium, we are helping deliver the minerals the world needs and the prosperity and security Canadians deserve.”
“Canada has a generational opportunity to lead in critical minerals, and this support from the federal government reinforces the importance of developing lithium resources responsibly and innovatively,” said Chris Doornbos, President and CEO of E3 Lithium.
“This investment allows us to move rapidly toward commercial production while contributing to Canada’s energy security and economic growth. E3 is on track to be one of the first commercial lithium projects to come on-stream in Canada, creating jobs and future opportunities for all Canadians.”
