India's Agrochemical ascent is fueled by structural strengths, policy enablers, and global opportunities, positioning it as an indispensable manufacturing hub for food security worldwide. Currently, India's Agrochemical market stands at US $11.2 billion, projected to reach US $14.5 billion by FY28, primarily through export growth.
Exports have surged nearly three fold in the last decade to US $3.3 billion in FY25, establishing India as the world's third-largest exporter. Domestic penetration remains low at 0.6 kg/hectare versus global average of 2 kg/hectare, offering substantial growth potential amid India's role as the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables.
India’s key markets include the US, Brazil, Vietnam, and regions like Latin America, South East Asia, and Africa, where demand for affordable crop protection is rising. Capital expenditure in FY24–25 totals Rs. 30,000 - 40,000 crore, focusing on agrochemical production to meet domestic and global needs.
However, the sector faces numerous challenges. Heavy reliance on Chinese imports exposes the sector to pricing pressures and disruptions. Moreover, lengthy approval processes under the current regulations hinder innovation and market entry. The sector needs to bridge the R&D investment gap. Global destocking, Chinese dumping, erratic monsoons, and high channel inventories squeeze margins. Sustainability is another key area that industry needs to look at. Addressing these requires policy reforms, increased R&D funding (via a US $150-200 million fund), and talent upskilling through ITIs and PPPs.
The session will explore to develop a roadmap to realise the growth potential of the Indian Agrochemical sector.
Topics to be covered during the session are: Encouraging domestic manufacturing; Developing manufacturing clusters; Boosting R&D for next-generation molecules; Enhancing use of advanced technologies; Improving infrastructure and logistics; Meeting global environmental standards; Promoting sustainable agriculture practices; Bridging skill gap; and Branding "Make in India" agrochemicals.
