SK Materials and Exxon Mobil join hands for blue ammonia

SK Materials will enter the blue ammonia market in partnership with ExxonMobil, a global energy company.

SK Holdings Materials, a company specializing in material technology, said, “SK Materials and Exxon Mobil promoted a project to mass-produce blue ammonia using next-generation carbon capture technology, and through this, On the 21st, we signed an agreement on major conditions (HoA) at the SK Seorin Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, with the main aim of introducing blue ammonia to SK Materials in Korea.”

Since blue ammonia produces blue hydrogen from which CO2 has been removed as a raw material, carbon emissions are only minimal when combusted, so it has the advantage of being able to reduce carbon as much as blue ammonia, which is used for co-fired power generation with coal. Co-fired power generation is a method of generating power by mixing two or more types of fuel.

ExxonMobil plans to build a facility to produce blue ammonia in Baytown, Texas, USA. SK Holdings Materials plans to support the transition to clean energy in the domestic coal power generation market by introducing blue ammonia and supplying it as a power generation fuel in time for co-fired power generation in Korea.

"We will supply blue ammonia as an energy source that can replace the main fuel for domestic coal power generation in the future, and create an environment that produces electricity while reducing carbon emissions," said an official from SK Materials.

In addition, SK Holdings Materials plans to expand cooperation with Exxon Mobil to develop a carbon reduction solution business in the mid- to long-term.

Lee Yong-wook, CEO of SK Materials, said, “We plan to strengthen cooperation with ExxonMobil to become a partner that promotes various projects for carbon reduction together, starting with blue ammonia.” We will build a value chain of consumption and distribution.”
