To boost fast-track development potential

Energy giant BP has struck a major new gas and condensate discovery offshore Egypt, after successfully drilling the Denise W-1 exploration well in the Temsah Concession in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The find sits around 70 kilometres offshore in 95 metres of water and is located less than 10 kilometres from existing infrastructure—raising strong prospects for tie-backs and a fast-track development plan.

BP said the Denise W discovery shares reservoir characteristics with the nearby Temsah and Akhen fields, which have been producing since 2001. The well encountered high-quality gas-bearing sandstone reservoirs across a gross interval of approximately 90 metres.

The Denise W-1 well follows a binding head of agreement signed in July 2025 with EGPC and EGAS for a 20-year renewal of the Temsah Concession.

BP holds a 50% working interest alongside Eni, which holds the remaining 50% and operates the Denise Development Lease of the Temsah Concession through Petrobel, the joint venture between Eni and EGPC.

The discovery adds to a busy year for BP offshore Egypt. Earlier in 2026, the company was awarded two new exploration concessions—North-East El Alamein Offshore (100% BP) and West El Hammad Offshore (BP 25%, Eni 75%, operator)—both close to existing infrastructure.

Last month, BP also mobilised the DS-12 drilling rig to execute five firm wells and three optional wells in complex deepwater zones, aimed at boosting domestic gas output to meet rising Egyptian energy demand.

More recently, BP signed an agreement with GANOPE for Block 6 in the Red Sea, extending its footprint into a new exploration frontier.

BP has operated in Egypt for more than 63 years and continues to position itself as a key partner in developing the country’s energy resources through long-term investment and strategic partnerships.

The Denise W find marks BP’s second exploration discovery of the year, following 12 discoveries in 2025, further strengthening its resource base for long-term growth.
