The DoC affirms the project’s readiness to progress from discovery to development
PETRONAS, through its wholly owned subsidiary PETRONAS Suriname E&P B.V. (PSEPBV), together with Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. (Staatsolie), has reached a major milestone with the Declaration of Commerciality (DoC) for the Sloanea field in Block 52. This marks Suriname’s first gas development milestone and represents a significant step forward in the country’s expanding deepwater energy landscape.
The DoC affirms the project’s readiness to progress from discovery to development, subject to a final investment decision. It builds on the momentum generated by the Sloanea-1 exploration success in 2020 and reinforces the partners’ confidence in the hydrocarbon potential of Suriname’s offshore basin. The achievement also highlights their shared commitment to advancing the development of Suriname’s deepwater resources.
PETRONAS Vice President of International Assets, Upstream, Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman, said, “The Declaration of Commerciality for Sloanea-1 confirms the field’s economic feasibility for development and commercialisation. This milestone underscores the strong collaboration and trust between PETRONAS and Staatsolie, built on technical excellence, environmental responsibility, and a commitment to delivering shared value for the people of Suriname.”
PETRONAS entered into the Production Sharing Contract for Block 52 in 2013 and has since made three major discoveries within the block. The company operates Block 52 with an 80 per cent participating interest, while the remaining 20 per cent is held by Paradise Oil Company (POC), a Staatsolie subsidiary.
PETRONAS currently holds interests in eight offshore blocks in Suriname — Blocks 9, 10, 48, 52, 53, 63, 64, and 66 — strengthening its position as a committed partner in the country’s long-term energy growth ambitions.
The Declaration of Commerciality for Sloanea reflects PETRONAS’ focus on high-value growth through strong partnerships and advanced technical capabilities, while further elevating Surina me’s emergence as a key deepwater hub within the Suriname-Guyana Basin.
