The certifications highlight MPC’s continued leadership in operational excellence and sustainability

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) announced that six of its refineries have earned 2025 Energy Star certifications from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recognizing them among the top 25 per cent of similar U.S. facilities for energy efficiency. This achievement ties MPC’s 2022 industry record for the most refinery certifications in a single year.

The certifications highlight MPC’s continued leadership in operational excellence and sustainability. With these latest recognitions, the company’s all-time total of refinery Energy Star certifications has reached 79—more than all other refining companies combined since the program began recognizing refineries in 2006.

Among the honored facilities, MPC’s Canton, Ohio, and Garyville, Louisiana, refineries achieved Energy Star certification for the 20th consecutive year—marking recognition in every year that refineries have been eligible for the award.

The Robinson, Illinois, refinery earned its eighth consecutive certification and 11th overall; the Saint Paul Park, Minnesota, refinery received its seventh consecutive and eighth overall; the Anacortes, Washington, refinery achieved its sixth consecutive certification; and the Salt Lake City, Utah, refinery was recognized for the first time.

The EPA evaluates refinery performance using Solomon Associates’ Energy Intensity Index (EII), which benchmarks energy efficiency across facilities of similar size and complexity. To qualify, refineries must demonstrate top-quartile energy performance based on EII scores and meet stringent environmental compliance requirements.

“The success of these refineries is a direct result of our Focus on Energy (FOE) program, which uses key performance indicators to identify opportunities for reducing energy consumption and lowering greenhouse gas emissions,” said Tim Peterkoski, MPC’s Refining Environmental Senior Director.

“In 2024 alone, the FOE program helped us avoid the equivalent of 1.3 billion Btu per hour of energy use—the same amount of energy consumed by more than 80,000 U.S. homes or 140,000 gasoline-powered vehicles.”
