Thailand, which has set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, is increasingly looking at hydrogen and ammonia as part of its future energy mix
JERA Co has signed an MoU with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to explore development of hydrogen and ammonia value chains in Thailand, in a new push to advance low-carbon fuels in Southeast Asia’s energy transition.
The agreement was announced at the 8th Japan–Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue held on June 29, bringing together representatives from both sides as they outlined plans to assess commercial pathways for emerging clean fuels.
Under the MOU, the two energy players will work together across three key areas: identifying and evaluating market opportunities for hydrogen and ammonia, including technical, economic and commercial feasibility; studying their potential use in power generation as fuel substitutes; and reviewing the policy, regulatory and environmental frameworks needed for adoption.
Thailand, which has set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, is increasingly looking at hydrogen and ammonia as part of its future energy mix. However, scaling these fuels will require integrated infrastructure covering production, transport, storage and end-use—making cross-sector collaboration critical.
As Thailand’s largest power generator and single buyer of bulk electricity, EGAT sits at the center of the country’s energy system. JERA, meanwhile, is building out what it describes as Japan’s first integrated ammonia value chain by fiscal 2029, positioning both companies as key partners in early-stage market development.
"Partnerships will be essential to identifying scalable and practical pathways to a lower-carbon future,” said Izumi Kai, Managing Executive Officer, Head of Platform Business Division of JERA and CEO of JERA Asia.
“We are pleased to work with EGAT to assess the potential of hydrogen and ammonia as part of Thailand’s evolving energy mix. Building on our longstanding presence in the country, JERA remains committed to supporting solutions that balance sustainability, energy security, and economic growth.
The companies said the collaboration aligns with JERA’s broader “JERA Zero Emissions 2050” ambition, under which it aims to achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions across its global operations by mid-century while expanding renewable energy and lower-carbon thermal power solutions.
