The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC), various industry stakeholders and Dehradun-based Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) held a series of discussions on the feasibility study on "Feedstock Options on Petrochemicals".
The DCPC had assigned the study to IIP so as to identify potential feedstock for petrochemicals from conventional refinery process streams as well as non-conventional sources.
According to IIP, the cost of the project was nearly Rs 10 lakh.
The IIP discussed with representatives of public and private sector refineries issues related to feedstock availability, limited resource of crude oil and gas, and alternative sources which could be utilised in production of petrochemicals.
It discussed with representatives of industry associations and Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) the waste plastic reuse option.
And with the representatives of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) and CIPET, it discussed conversion of agriculture residues to chemicals and petrochemicals.
The DCPC had asked the IIP to include the following in its report:
1. In the Indian context, the alternate feedstock options need to be prioritised based on availability of alternate raw material, technology sources and their accessibility, commercial viability etc.
2. Industrial plants operating in different parts of the world with alternate feedstocks, their performance, future course of actions, incentives provided by the host country etc.
3. Potential hydrocarbon feedstock from the existing refinery which could be utilised for petrochemicals.
In India, currently both naphtha and natural gas constituents are used for the manufacture of petrochemicals. India does not have feedstock advantage unlike some other big players, like in the Gulf. Against this backdrop, availability of feedstock with all its alternates assumes importance.
One of the constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), IIP is a premier organisation dedicated to research and technology development in the hydrocarbon sector. It is devoted to multidisciplinary areas of research and development in the downstream sector of hydrocarbon and related industry.
