Cracks global top 1% for climate & water stewardship

ABB has secured top-tier A scores for both climate change and water stewardship in CDP’s 2025 rankings, placing the industrial technology leader among the top 1 percent of more than 22,100 companies assessed worldwide.

It is the first time ABB has achieved an A rating for water, earning a coveted double A-listing from the global non-profit.

Anke Hampel, Group Head of Sustainability at ABB, said: “Inclusion in CDP’s A List for both climate and water is an important recognition of our leadership in performance and corporate transparency. Achieving an A rating for Water for the first time is testament to our strengthened focus on water-related risks exposure, water stewardship, governance, as well as our enhanced supplier engagement on the topic of water risk.”

The milestone comes as climate change, population growth and industrial demand intensify pressure on global water resources. ABB has positioned water as a strategic priority, treating freshwater as a finite, shared resource and tightening controls across its value chain.

The company is driving innovation across the water management cycle, from production and distribution to wastewater treatment, while adhering to stringent regulatory and quality standards.

ABB’s water score has climbed rapidly in recent years, rising from a B in 2023 to an A- in 2024, and now reaching an A in 2025. The company conducts annual water-risk assessments across all 320 of its global sites, with particular focus on operations in water-stressed regions—91 sites in 2024 alone.

By the end of 2026, all ABB sites in water-stressed areas will be required to complete a water stewardship self-assessment, followed by targeted interventions to reduce water stress. ABB also encourages alignment with the globally recognized Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) framework.

That strategy is already delivering results on the ground.

ABB’s Nelamangala site, located northwest of Bengaluru, has become the company’s first facility to receive AWS Standard certification at Gold level.

Bengaluru is facing severe groundwater depletion driven by rapid urbanization and over-extraction, but ABB’s site has taken proactive steps to reverse the trend. Around 85 percent of treated water at the facility is recycled, allowing groundwater to be replenished at a rate nearly 1.25 times faster than consumption. Extensive rainwater harvesting has reduced surface runoff and contributed to an increase of more than 30 meters in local groundwater levels over the past three years.

Awarded in December 2025, the AWS Gold certification recognizes the site’s investments in smart water management, local innovation, and strong engagement with communities and stakeholders, confirming it meets a globally recognized benchmark for responsible water stewardship.
