Avantium is joining forces with Japanese plastics trading company Sojitz Pla-Net Corporation to accelerate the adoption of its plant-based polymer materials FDCA and PEF in Japan, targeting growing demand for renewable and circular alternatives to conventional plastics.
Under the strategic partnership, Sojitz Pla-Net, part of the Sojitz Group, will use its extensive commercial network and expertise in plastics, packaging materials and sustainable solutions to develop the Japanese market for Avantium’s releaf materials.
The companies will focus on building customer relationships and expanding market opportunities for FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) and PEF (polyethylene furanoate), while also exploring joint business opportunities with customers and partners in international markets through the Sojitz network.
PEF is Avantium’s flagship polymer and is marketed under the releaf brand. Made from plant-based FDCA, PEF is recyclable and offers stronger barrier properties than conventional plastics, positioning it for applications ranging from packaging and textiles to consumer goods and other high-performance uses.
Japan is emerging as a key market for sustainable materials as demand grows for renewable and circular packaging solutions. The new partnership aims to put releaf in front of Japanese brand owners, converters, packaging producers and other players across the value chain.
The companies will make their first joint appearance at Sustainable Material Expo (SUSMA) 2026, running from September 30 to October 2 in Chiba. At the exhibition, Avantium and Sojitz Pla-Net will showcase PEF applications and meet prospective customers and partners seeking next-generation plant-based materials.
“Japan has long been an important market for Avantium, with strong interest in sustainable, high-performance materials. We are pleased to partner with Sojitz Pla-Net, whose extensive market knowledge, customer relationships and sustainability focus make them an ideal partner to further expand opportunities for FDCA and PEF.
"While our initial focus is on Japan, we also look forward to exploring broader opportunities together through the international Sojitz network," said Yuzhong Chen, Business Development Manager Asia at Avantium.
