Asahi Kasei’s South Korean subsidiary, Tongsuh Petrochemical, has earned Reasonable Assurance verification for the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of its acrylonitrile (AN). This high-level certification follows a thorough audit of data and processes at its Ulsan facility, meeting growing customer demand for independently verified environmental data.
The audit was conducted by Socotec Certification Japan, which reviewed the methodology, source data, and reporting process used to calculate the fiscal 2025 PCF for acrylonitrile from raw material procurement through production. Acrylonitrile is an essential chemical intermediate used in a wide range of applications, including ABS resins, acrylamide, acrylic fibers, and carbon fiber precursor materials.
By achieving Reasonable Assurance, Tongsuh Petrochemical’s carbon footprint data meets the highest standard of verification, far exceeding the baseline for Limited Assurance. This milestone reflects years of progress in lowering production emissions. In 2021, the company earned the globally recognized ISCC PLUS certification to ensure the traceability of bio-based and circular feedstocks. Building on this framework, Tongsuh Petrochemical has been producing and marketing acrylonitrile made from biomass-derived propylene since 2022 using a certified mass-balance approach.
Asahi Kasei will cut acrylonitrile production emissions through catalyst and manufacturing upgrades while expanding biomass feedstock use. By combining lower-carbon materials with reliable environmental data, the company aims to deliver higher value to customers and strengthen its role as a global sustainability partner for industries decarbonizing their supply chains.
