Global chemicals giant BASF has expanded its certified biomass balance (BMB) portfolio for architectural coatings.

This, with the launch of Dispex AA 4145 MB, Rheovis PU 1333 MB and Rheovis HS 1169 MB, giving coatings manufacturers new options to reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF) of their formulations without compromising performance.

Certified under the REDcert2 standard, the new additives are designed to deliver the same performance as BASF's conventional products while supporting customers' sustainability goals.

The biomass balance (BMB) approach reduces reliance on fossil feedstocks by replacing fossil-based raw materials with certified renewable resources at the beginning of the value chain. Using a mass balance approach, an equivalent amount of renewable content is allocated to the finished product.

The resulting BMB products are independently certified according to REDcert² and retain the same properties as their conventionally produced counterparts. Under BASF's PCF methodology, the certified products also offer a lower product carbon footprint than the corresponding conventional BASF additives.

“With the introduction of these biomass-balanced products, BASF is empowering coatings manufacturers to reduce carbon footprint without reformulation challenges,” said Sylvain Huguenard, Global Vice President, Additives at BASF.

“Especially in interior architectural applications, where sustainability expectations are rising, our solutions help customers pursue carbon-footprint reduction targets while maintaining performance.”

The new additives are tailored for key architectural coating applications. Dispex AA 4145 MB enhances pigment wetting to achieve high-quality finishes, while Rheovis PU 1333 MB and Rheovis HS 1169 MB deliver controlled rheology and consistent application performance across a broad range of coating formulations.
