Borouge International and LANXESS are accelerating the shift toward lower-carbon chemical production with a new collaboration centered on sustainable acetone, a key feedstock for rubber additives.

At the heart of the partnership is Borouge’s Borvida B-acetone, an ISCC PLUS-certified material derived from non-food waste and residue biomass.

Chemically identical to conventional acetone, it is being supplied to LANXESS for use in its mass-balanced antidegradant Vulkanox HS/LG Scopeblue—positioning circular feedstocks directly into industrial performance materials.

Borouge International, formed in 2026 through the integration of Borouge, Borealis and NOVA Chemicals, is building scale across global polyolefins markets. Its Borvida portfolio is designed to replace fossil-based inputs with renewable and circular alternatives while maintaining identical performance characteristics.

The companies say the system relies on a mass balance chain-of-custody model, allowing renewable content to be tracked from waste-derived feedstock through to final chemical output. According to the company, the result is a significantly lower carbon footprint while preserving product purity and industrial consistency.

Borouge highlights that mass-balanced acetone using Borvida inputs has already been operating in industrial environments for several years, with reported emissions reductions of up to 175% per kilogram compared with conventional acetone.

“At Lanxess, we are committed to making our value chains more sustainable, and that journey starts with the raw materials,” says Jens-Hendrik Fischer, Senior Vice President of Lanxess Business Unit RheinChemie.

“Thanks to our partnership with Borouge International, we can offer bio-based circular, mass-balanced acetone solutions that help our customers accelerate their sustainability ambitions.”

The partnership underscores a broader push across the chemical industry to secure scalable, verifiable low-carbon feedstocks amid tightening sustainability requirements and regulatory pressure.

“By working together across the value chain, we can unlock the full value of sustainable acetone from bio waste. In collaboration with Lanxess, we are developing innovative, high-performance solutions that support customers’ sustainability goals and help them prepare for future sustainable transformation.” says Thomas Van De Velde, Borouge International Senior Vice President Base Chemicals.

With Borouge International positioning itself as a global circular feedstock supplier and LANXESS integrating these inputs into performance chemicals, both companies are betting on mass-balanced chemistry as a bridge between industrial scale and sustainability targets.
