The achievement follows a successful International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC+) final onsite audit conducted by TÜV SÜD
Sasol has marked a significant turning point in South Africa’s energy transition, with Natref becoming the first refinery in Africa to secure product sustainability certification for key fuels pathways, alongside certified sustainable chemicals production at Secunda Operations.
The achievement follows a successful International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC+) final onsite audit conducted by TÜV SÜD, a global testing, inspection and certification authority.
The certification covers Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Renewable Diesel produced via co-processing of used cooking oil and vegetable oil at Natref, as well as certified sustainable chemicals output at Secunda.
Sarushen Pillay, Sasol Executive Vice President: Business Building, Strategy and Technology, said the development signals a shift from planning to execution.
“This milestone demonstrates that Sasol can deliver certified sustainable fuels and chemicals at scale using existing assets in South Africa. Independent certification strengthens confidence in our transition strategy, our operating capability and our ability to compete in global low carbon markets,” Pillay said.
The certification strengthens Sasol’s ability to supply verified fuels and chemicals across domestic, premium and export markets, reinforcing Natref and Secunda’s role in enabling traceable, sustainable production across the value chain.
For customers, it provides independently verified assurance that products meet internationally recognised sustainability standards, supporting traceability, regulatory compliance and decarbonisation goals.
“Certification enables access to markets and supports credible sustainability claims by ensuring products are independently verified,” Pillay added.
Walter Reithmaier, CEO of TÜV SÜD´s Industry & Infrastructure Division, emphasised the role of third-party verification in global supply chains.
"Globally recognized certification schemes like ISCC PLUS, combined with impartial audits conducted by independent third parties like TÜV SÜD, are essential to demonstrate the sustainability, traceability and greenhouse gas reduction of products and processes.
"Through our impartial certifications, we ensure transparency and build trust among stakeholders throughout the entire supply chain – from suppliers to manufacturers to consumers."
The milestone further strengthens Sasol’s positioning in South Africa’s energy transition, enabling certified sustainable fuel and chemical supply from existing domestic infrastructure while aligning with global sustainability benchmarks.
It also advances commitments outlined at Sasol’s 2025 Capital Markets Day, creating a platform for future scale-up opportunities, partnerships, and continued engagement on policy frameworks supporting South Africa’s transition agenda.
