SIBUR is the first in Russia to deliver a batch of polymers with a partially offset carbon footprint to China

SIBUR agreed with Chinese partners to supply 745.5 tons of polymers with a partially offset carbon footprint at the international exhibition Chinaplas. The offset volume amounted to more than 750 tons in Co2 –eq.

Polyethylene and polypropylene granules were purchased by four companies from the People's Republic of China. Each company received a certificate of carbon offset from SIBUR's account. The purchased products will be used to manufacture food packaging, storage and space management products, and in the chemical industry.

The carbon footprint of the delivered products was reduced using carbon units received from the climate project at SIBUR’s Zapsibneftekhim plant.

Ilya Melman, Executive Director, Sibur International Trading Shanghai, said: "Our portfolio of carbon unit deals has been expanded by 4 international deliveries. This experience is unique not only for us, it will be useful for both Russian and foreign companies focused on sustainable development. We see the interest of partners from the Asia-Pacific region in products with a carbon footprint offset. According to our forecasts, the trend will intensify. This is facilitated by the active development of international green standards and the growing demand for such products from the end consumer."

“We are proud to be among the first in the industry to use products with a partially offset carbon footprint. This [use of such products] is clearly a growing trend that helps us stand out from the competition,” noted Ningbo Huashou Packaging Technology, which acquired SIBUR’s polymers. The company’s representatives also said that a significant portion of its B2C customers are the younger generation, who are not indifferent to sustainability issues.

Chengdu Zhuangda New Material, which also purchased a batch of SIBUR polymers with a partially offset carbon footprint, emphasized that the trend towards decarbonization is observed throughout the world, and this is especially noticeable in markets where the company operates for export.

SIBUR continues to build a sustainable supply chain, providing its partners with the opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of their products. Thus, in the summer of 2024, SIBUR agreed to cooperate with a manufacturer of synthetic fabrics and woven bags, as well as with a company producing polymer packaging for agriculture and technical textiles. The total volume of polypropylene supplies with a partially offset carbon footprint then amounted to 1,850 tons.

SIBUR has already completed more than 20 transactions with carbon units, which have allowed the company's customers and partners to reduce or completely eliminate the carbon footprint of their activities, products or events. The company's portfolio includes 8 implemented climate projects with a total greenhouse gas emission reduction effect of 10.8 million tons of CO2 - eq over a 10-year horizon. Of these, more than 3.3 million verified carbon units are already available for operations in both the Russian and international markets.
