The deal strengthens its reach in the chemical and petrochemical sectors and sharpens its focus on sustainability-driven waste solutions

VLS Environmental Solutions is expanding its footprint in hazardous waste management with the acquisition of Merichem Company’s Caustic Services business. The deal strengthens its reach in the chemical and petrochemical sectors and sharpens its focus on sustainability-driven waste solutions.

Similarly, the acquisition brings Merichem’s long-standing expertise in beneficial reuse into the VLS Environmental Solutions portfolio. Founded in 1945, Merichem has spent nearly eight decades diverting hazardous spent caustics from disposal and converting them into reusable industrial inputs for clients around the world.

“This acquisition provides the most technically advanced beneficial reuse and caustic waste solutions to industrial and refinery markets,” said John Magee, CEO of VLS Environmental Solutions. “By integrating Merichem's portfolio, we can now offer an unmatched level of sustainable solutions for clients across multiple industries.”

For Merichem, the transaction marks the next phase of a sustainability-focused legacy. Chairman and CEO Kendra Lee said the alignment with VLS amplifies the company’s mission and market impact. “We are thrilled to combine our heritage grounded in sustainability with VLS' expansive operational reach to deliver even greater value and sustainability to our customers.”

The deal comes as industrial operators face growing regulatory pressure and rising sustainability expectations. By integrating Merichem’s caustic services business, VLS can now offer beneficial reuse as a core alternative to traditional hazardous waste disposal for select industrial by-products.

“With the integration of Merichem's caustic services business, VLS can now offer options beyond hazardous waste disposition to its customers for specific by-product streams—such as spent caustics and sulfur-laden byproducts,” said Chris Lobue, Executive Vice President of VLS’ Hazardous Waste Services division.

“We are excited to offer expanded handling options that meet the strict regulatory and operational needs of our clients in the chemical and petrochemical industries.”

Following the acquisition, Merichem will operate as VLS SustainChem within VLS’ Hazardous Waste division.
