Avient Corporation has introduced Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology, a new non-PFAS additive for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles designed to help manufacturers comply with tightening fluorochemical regulations without modifying existing extrusion blow-molding lines.

The drop-in additive is engineered for monolayer extrusion blow-molded HDPE bottles used in personal care, household, home and garden, and automotive care applications.

According to the company, the technology reduces solvent permeation by up to ten times compared with unmodified HDPE while allowing processors to continue using standard production equipment.

"Our customers are facing pressure from two directions — tightening regulations on fluorinated materials and meeting their customers’ expectations for robust packaging,” said Mayendran Pillay, General Manager.

“Cesa Solvent Barrier Technology lets converters keep their existing extrusion blow molding lines and still deliver bottles that can hold up to aggressive solvents throughout the full shelf life. It also helps brand owners build consumer loyalty and trust by maintaining package integrity and product quality and performance without the use of fluorinated barrier treatments.”

Avient said the pellet-blend additive is formulated without intentionally added per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and is eligible for APR Recognition below certain concentration levels.

The company added that the solution integrates directly into standard extrusion blow-molding processes, eliminating the need for specialized equipment or secondary processing.

Internal validation data cited by Avient indicates the technology delivers a two- to ten-fold reduction in solvent-related weight loss across a range of reagents, including mineral spirits and toluene. The additive is also compatible with regrind materials and has been screened against more than five reagents in the company's laboratories.

The company said the technology addresses common packaging issues associated with solvent permeation, including bottle paneling, weight loss, poor label adhesion, and potential failure to meet U.S. Department of Transportation hazardous-material packaging requirements under 49 CFR.

Avient expects the new technology to support a broad range of packaging applications, including personal care products, household cleaners, home and garden chemicals, and automotive care fluids, where maintaining package integrity and solvent containment is critical throughout distribution and shelf life.
