Worley to engineer D-CRBN renewable syngas demonstration plant in Belgium

Worley will be responsible for the plant’s design, as well as safety and cost studies required to advance the project toward construction

Engineering firm Worley has been selected by D-CRBN to provide engineering services for a renewable syngas demonstration plant in Antwerp, marking a key step toward commercialising D-CRBN’s plasma-based technology for lower-carbon fuels, plastics and chemicals.
 
The modular plant will use electricity-powered plasma technology to convert carbon dioxide and biomethane into renewable syngas, a versatile feedstock that can be used across the chemicals and fuels industries.
 
Worley will be responsible for the plant’s design, as well as safety and cost studies required to advance the project toward construction.
 
“Moving from concept development to detailed engineering is an important milestone for D-CRBN. Worley’s experience in gas separation, multidisciplinary engineering and industrial project execution will help us translate our proprietary plasma technology into an integrated and safe demonstration unit. The project will provide the operational data and engineering foundation needed for our near-future commercial-scale deployment,” said Gill Scheltjens, D-CRBN CEO.
 
The demonstration facility is expected to produce 200 tonnes of renewable syngas annually, while providing the basis for a future commercial-scale plant with an estimated capacity of around 10,000 tonnes a year.
 
Its modular design is intended to enable faster deployment and allow the technology to be expanded as demand grows.

The latest engineering contract builds on an existing partnership between the two companies. Worley previously supported D-CRBN with concept development for the plant’s syngas purification stream, reactor scale-up assessment and industrial planning.
 
The project comes as industries look for lower-carbon alternatives to conventional pathways for producing fuels and chemical feedstocks, with renewable syngas offering a potential route to reduce emissions while using existing industrial value chains.
