The company says its technologies helped organizations worldwide cut more than $9.5 billion in energy and operating costs

Johnson Controls is touting billions in cost savings and major emissions cuts as it doubles down on energy efficiency as a business strategy, according to its newly released 2026 Sustainability Report.

The company says its technologies helped organizations worldwide cut more than $9.5 billion in energy and operating costs, while delivering environmental gains equivalent to removing emissions from nearly 6 million U.S. homes.

"Our purpose is grounded in the belief that what we do matters for human society. In the mission-critical environments we serve, performance, reliability and sustainability are foundational for the future," said Joakim Weidemanis, Johnson Controls CEO.

"Our 2026 Sustainability Report shows that in the industries where failure is not an option, we put energy efficiency to work to unlock growth opportunities and enable peak performance, which frees up capital for long-term growth in the places that really matter."

The report highlights concrete savings in high-stakes environments:

At Children's of Alabama, upgraded systems cut heating fuel use by 69%, saving $700,000 annually—rising to nearly $900,000 with AI integration.

In Stuttgart Münster, large-scale heat pumps now provide climate-neutral heating to 10,000 households, eliminating over 15,000 metric tons of CO₂e annually.

The company also reported a 33% reduction in Scope 3 emissions tied to the use of its products—more than double its 2030 target.

"With energy prices on the rise, the most forward-looking companies are treating energy efficiency as a business strategy to drive every dollar into innovation, technology adoption and competitive advantage," said Katie McGinty, vice president and chief sustainability and external relations officer at Johnson Controls.

"Energy efficiency is one of the fastest ways to lower operating expenses, reduce emissions and improve performance at the same time. At Johnson Controls, we're proud to help customers turn decarbonization into a source of financial strength and competitive advantage."

Johnson Controls says it is also making progress internally: 46% reduction in operational emissions since 2017; 91% of electricity matched with carbon-free energy;
84% progress toward its 2030 emissions goal.

The company is channeling 77% of its R&D spending into sustainability-focused innovation, including: heat pumps cutting emissions by up to 55% and costs by 35%;
systems delivering up to 80% electricity savings in critical operations.

With data centers under pressure from surging AI demand, Johnson Controls says its systems can cut non-IT energy use by over 50% in major hubs. At the largest scale, those savings could power more than 200,000 homes annually.

The company is also promoting technologies that reuse waste heat from data centers, turning excess energy into a resource for nearby buildings and community.

Johnson Controls is positioning energy efficiency not just as a climate solution—but as a financial lever for industries where uptime, cost control and sustainability increasingly go hand in hand.
