The Pacifico Mexinol facility is set to produce 2.1 million tons per year of low-carbon methanol, with approximately 15% qualifying as “Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin” under ISCC-EU criteria

MAIRE announces that its subsidiary NEXTCHEM has been awarded a contract valued at approximately €210 million for basic engineering and the supply of critical proprietary equipment for the Pacifico Mexinol project. Located in Sinaloa, Mexico, this ultra-low carbon methanol production facility will have a capacity of 2.1 million tons per year, with approximately 15% qualifying under the ISCC-EU Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) criteria for green fuels.

The agreement was signed by NEXTCHEM’s subsidiary, KT Tech, with Samsung E&A, the project’s EPC contractor.

Valued at over US$ 3.3 billion, the Pacifico Mexinol project is being jointly developed by Texas-based Transition Industries and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, and will be executed by a consortium of third-party partners.

Once operational in 2029, the facility is expected to become the world’s largest single ultra-low carbon methanol plant—producing approximately 350,000 metric tons of RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) methanol and 1.8 million metric tons of low-carbon methanol derived from natural gas with carbon capture annually.

The contract—subject to a Final Investment Decision expected in the fourth quarter of 2025—covers basic engineering and the supply of critical proprietary equipment based on NEXTCHEM’s NX AdWinMethanol Zero technology, along with site assistance services and support for commissioning, start-up, and operations.

Fabio Fritelli, Managing Director of NEXTCHEM, commented: “This landmark achievement—the largest single award ever granted to NEXTCHEM—represents a pivotal milestone in our business trajectory and underscores the reliability of our portfolio of sustainable technology solutions. We are honored to support this strategic initiative, which promises to be a game-changer for Mexico’s domestic economy and the global energy transition.”
