The partnership will focus on further qualifying Talnode-C for Japanese battery applications
ASX-listed Talga Group has taken a major step toward entering Japan’s high-performance battery market, signing a strategic Letter of Intent (LOI) with Dainen Materials for the future supply of its flagship Talnode-C anode material from Sweden’s Vittangi Anode Project.
The agreement marks a significant commercial milestone for Talga after more than five years of technical collaboration with Dainen, a leading Japanese battery materials supplier, as both companies work toward a long-term supply partnership targeting some of the world’s most demanding lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
Under the non-binding LOI, the companies aim to negotiate a binding term sheet by September 2026, with the goal of finalising a Strategic Anode Offtake Agreement by December 2026.
The partnership will focus on further qualifying Talnode-C for Japanese battery applications, while Dainen continues assessments of Talga’s supply chain transparency, ESG credentials, carbon footprint and Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC)-free status.
Dainen will also support Talga, on a best endeavours basis, in engaging Japanese investors to help secure co-financing for the Vittangi Anode Project.
Talga CEO Martin Phillips said the agreement strengthens the company’s position as demand grows for secure and sustainable graphite supply chains.
"Dainen brings extensive experience as a key supplier of battery anode materials to Japan’s demanding hybrid and electric vehicle market, and we are most pleased to partner with them to grow our mutual business. As there is growing incentive to secure new sources of graphite anode for society’s critical battery applications, we look forward to providing our high-performance anode supply from Sweden."
Dainen Vice President Daisuke Hayabara said the partnership builds on a strong foundation developed over five years of cooperation.
"Dainen has partnered with Talga for over five years, and we have great confidence in Talnode -C's quality and consistency for Japan's most demanding battery applications. As our customers place growing importance on transparent, traceable, and diversified supply chains, we see this LOI as a natural next step in our relationship and look forward to working toward a long-term offtake agreement that supports both Talga's growth and Japan's critical materials strategy."
While the LOI remains non-binding and no material financial impact is expected at this stage, the potential partnership represents a significant commercial opportunity for Talga as it advances development of the Vittangi Anode Project and expands its global battery materials ambitions.
Dainen supplies anode active materials to major Japanese automotive, energy storage and electronics manufacturers, while Talga is developing proprietary graphite purification, shaping and coating technologies designed to deliver high-performance, low-emission lithium-ion battery anode materials.
