The Indian petrochemical industry stands as a cornerstone of the nation's economic architecture, fueling growth across diverse sectors such as agriculture, automotive, packaging, construction, textiles, and consumer goods.
India’s petrochemical industry is at a pivotal crossroads. Petrochemical demand typically grows at 1.3 to 1.5 times of GDP. For a developing nation like India, which is aiming for a $5 trillion economy in the coming decades, this presents a massive opportunity. While global per capita consumption is around 38 kg, India stands at just 30 kg, indicating significant headroom for growth.
Today, India’s petrochemicals market is valued at around US$ 51 billion and is projected to reach US$ 350 billion by 2040. This growth is underpinned by surging domestic demand, driven by a burgeoning middle class, rapid urbanization, and rising per capita consumption of petrochemical-derived products like plastics and polymers.
However, the sector faces a transformative juncture amid global challenges, including volatile feedstock prices, geopolitical disruptions, and the imperative for decarbonization.
The petrochemical industry has seen significant activity over the past five years, with several new projects in the pipeline. While the sector experienced a strong growth trajectory, margins have notably declined over the past two years from their peak levels in FY2022. Looking ahead, sustaining momentum will require consistent capacity additions—ideally one new cracker every year. Despite India’s feedstock disadvantage, domestic production has remained competitive, largely supported by the 7.5%–10% import duty protection extended to the industry.

          Overview
The 3rd Edition of the PETROCHEM SUMMIT 2025 aims to convene industry leaders,
policymakers, innovators, and global stakeholders to explore strategies for resilient
growth, technological advancement, and environmental stewardship.

The Summit seeks to analyze key drivers of the sector's expansion, including capacity
additions, investment inflows, and export potential, while projecting India's
contribution to over 10% of global petrochemical growth in the next decade.

It will deliberate on hurdles such as raw material import dependency (around 45% for
intermediates), high logistics costs, inadequate R&D infrastructure, and competition
from low-cost imports, proposing actionable solutions like tariff rationalization and
            cluster development.

The Summit will highlight emerging trends in green chemistry, circular economy
practices, bioplastics, and digital transformation (e.g., Industry 4.0 and AI
integration) to align with India's net-zero emissions target by 2070.

It facilitates networking, knowledge exchange, and partnerships to attract
investments exceeding US$87-100 billion over the next decade, leveraging policies
like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and Petroleum, Chemicals, and
            Petrochemicals Investment Regions (PCPIRs).

This Summit will not only spotlight India's petrochemical prowess but also ignite
collaborative action to harness its full potential, ensuring the sector remains an engine
            of inclusive and sustainable growth.
