Plastipak, a global packaging and recycling leader, is accelerating its sustainability push with O2Blox, a nylon-free PET oxygen barrier designed to protect sensitive foods while improving recyclability in existing PET systems.

The innovation has already earned recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) through its Critical Guidance Path program and RecyClass Technology Approval for clear bottle-to-bottle PET recycling applications—signaling strong industry validation for its design-for-recycling approach.

Engineered to deliver oxygen protection without compromising material recovery, O2Blox is built to move seamlessly through established PET recycling streams. Plastipak says the technology helps reduce disruption in recycling processes while supporting the production of high-quality recycled material, including food-grade rPET.

The material is aimed at oxygen-sensitive food and beverage categories where shelf life and product integrity are critical. Applications include juices, ketchup, salad dressings, and functional beverages—segments where packaging performance and circularity goals often collide.

Plastipak has already scaled the technology commercially in partnership with Eckes-Granini Group, bringing O2Blox into real-world production and demonstrating its viability at industrial scale.

Key claims around the technology include: Nylon-free PET oxygen barrier design, APR recognition for recyclability performance
RecyClass approval for PET bottle-to-bottle recycling, Compatibility with existing PET recycling infrastructure.

The company says O2Blox reflects a broader strategy of aligning packaging performance with evolving regulatory and sustainability expectations, particularly as brands face growing pressure to increase recycled content and improve recyclability outcomes.

At the core of the development is Plastipak’s engineering and sustainability teams, who reworked traditional barrier structures to better fit circular economy requirements without weakening product protection.

“The development of O2Blox reflects our commitment to solving complex packaging challenges by creating solutions that work not only for products, but for the entire recycling system. It is a clear example of how we bring together people, product, and planet while continuing to package the future," said Miguel Vieira, Director International Packaging Development.

Plastipak says the goal is to provide brands with practical, scalable packaging solutions that meet both performance demands and recycling system realities—bridging the gap between innovation, manufacturing, and end-of-life recovery.
