Effective waste management and eco-friendly processes are critical for the sustainability of India's rapidly growing chemical industry, which contributes significantly to GDP but faces challenges regarding toxic waste, energy intensity, and water consumption. As the industry projects growth to US $300 billion by 2030, adopting sustainable practices is moving from a regulatory obligation to a business imperative.
Effective waste management and the adoption of eco-friendly processes are critical for the sustainability of India’s chemical industry, which is projected to grow significantly by 2030, raising concerns about hazardous waste generation, water pollution, and carbon emissions.
India generates over 62 million tons of waste annually, with chemical, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical sectors contributing heavily to hazardous, solid, and liquid waste.
To align with global ESG standards and domestic regulatory pressure, the industry is transitioning toward "green chemistry"—designing processes that prevent waste at the source rather than treating it afterward—and adopting circular economy models where by-products are repurposed.
