Avantium clears major hurdle as furandicarboxylic acid plant moves toward first production

Avantium has completed commissioning of the purification unit at its FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, clearing a major hurdle on the road to commercial-scale production of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA).
The plant is billed as the world’s first commercial-scale facility for FDCA production. With the purification unit now commissioned, all major process units are operational, marking a key milestone toward full plant start-up and the production of the first batches of FDCA.
The latest achievement follows the start-up of the plant’s utility systems and sugar dehydration unit, as well as the successful commissioning of the oxidation unit.
Avantium is now moving into integrated start-up activities, with the focus shifting to producing and qualifying its first FDCA batches.
Hero de Jager, interim Chief Operations Officer of Avantium, said: "The successful commissioning of the purification unit is an important step in the start-up of our FDCA Flagship Plant. Having completed commissioning across all major process units, our focus now shifts to the production of the first batches of FDCA. We remain committed to the safe and successful start-up of the Plant and to commencing commercial deliveries under our existing offtake agreements."
