Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) has awarded a contract to thyssenkrupp Udhe India Private Ltd (TKUIPL) for the supply of a 600 million tonne per day (MTPD) (2,00,000 million tonne per annum or MTPA) weak nitric acid-III plant on an LEPC basis. The agreement follows the company's board approval on August 13, 2024.

“Subsequent to the Board approval in its meeting held on August 13, 2024 for installation of Weak Nitric Acid-III plant of 600 MTPD capacity, i.e. 2, 00,000 MTPA, GNFC (Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited) had entered into agreement with thyssenkrupp Udhe India Private Limited (TKUIPL) for supply of Weak Nitric Acid-III plant on LEPC basis,” GNFC said in a regulatory filing.

TKUIPL had tie-up with their parent company thyssenkrupp Uhde for supply of process knowhow and license for Weak Nitric Acid-III plant.

GNFC currently operates two nitric acid plants licensed by thyssenkrupp Uhde. The third plant aims to strengthen the company's market presence while maintaining its commitment to environmental conservation. “The third plant will enhance the capacity of GNFC by around 57% and fulfill the downstream requirement to support the Make in India campaign with commitment to environment conservation,” the company said.

GNFC started its manufacturing and marketing operations by setting up in 1982, one of the world’s largest single-stream ammonia-urea fertilizer complexes. Over the next few years, GNFC successfully commissioned different projects in fields as diverse as chemicals, fertilizers and electronics.
