Nippon Paint to dissolve Surf Chemicals unit in major Japan business reorganization

The move is designed to create a more integrated business structure

Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. (NPHD) has announced a major restructuring of its Japan operations, with the Nippon Paint Group set to reorganize its domestic consolidated subsidiaries effective January 1, 2027.

Under the reorganization plan, the business operations of Nippon Paint Surf Chemicals Co., Ltd. (NPSU) will be split and integrated into two existing group companies — Nippon Paint Automotive Coatings Co., Ltd. (NPAC) and Nippon Paint Industrial Coatings Co., Ltd. (NPIU). Following the transition, NPSU will be dissolved.

The move is designed to create a more integrated business structure, allowing the Group to combine its surface treatment and coatings capabilities, which have previously been managed separately across subsidiaries.

NPHD said the Japan Group has been advancing organizational management through a matrix structure overseen by four functional CXOs to drive future growth. The company said the new structure will enable it to deliver surface treatment products and coatings products in a more unified manner across the Group.

Through the reorganization, Nippon Paint aims to strengthen product development and technical service capabilities while improving competitiveness and customer satisfaction.

Under the new framework, automotive surface treatment agent operations — excluding NPSU’s existing production functions — will be transferred to NPAC. Meanwhile, NPIU will absorb the general industrial surface treatment agent business along with all production functions related to surface treatment agents currently managed by NPSU.

The reorganization will take effect on January 1, 2027, marking a significant step in Nippon Paint’s efforts to streamline operations and enhance collaboration across its Japanese businesses.
