Nouryon showcases Biocide Solutions as Europe tightens rules for disinfecting cleaners

Nouryon says its ingredients have demonstrated efficacy against bacteria, yeasts and enveloped viruses

Global specialty chemicals leader Nouryon is putting its biocide portfolio in the spotlight as evolving European regulations reshape the market for disinfecting cleaning products.

At the SEPAWA Congress in Berlin, Germany, the company is showcasing its range of biocidal active substances, which help cleaning products tackle dirt and kill germs, giving manufacturers options to develop effective household, industrial and institutional cleaners that meet regulatory requirements.

With regulatory scrutiny of disinfecting ingredients continuing to evolve, Nouryon is positioning its portfolio around three key advantages: broad antimicrobial efficacy, a choice of chemical technologies and established regulatory support in Europe and the United States.

The portfolio includes Arquad quaternary ammonium compounds, commonly known as quats, and Triameen Y12D, a nonquat alternative. The range gives formulators flexibility to select ingredients suited to their product requirements and applicable regulations.

Nouryon says its ingredients have demonstrated efficacy against bacteria, yeasts and enveloped viruses through testing under European standards EN 1276, EN 1650 and EN 14476. The ingredients are also included on the French Positive List.

Regulatory backing is another key selling point. In Europe, biocidal active substances are assessed under the EU's Biocidal Products Regulation, while products and substances subject to U.S. requirements must meet applicable Environmental Protection Agency registration rules.

Nouryon supports its active substances with full EU regulatory dossiers. Triameen Y12D is also registered with the US EPA and in all 50 states, the company said.

“No single ingredient can carry an entire industry,” said Brad Pearson, vice president of Cleaning Goods at Nouryon. “Having more than one chemistry to choose from gives our customers options as rules continue to evolve. We’ve invested in the science behind these ingredients for years, so as restrictions change, our customers will continue to have options.”

To support customers over the long term, Nouryon manufactures its biocides at multiple sites worldwide, strengthening its ability to maintain supply.

The portfolio sits within Nouryon’s Home and Personal Care business unit, part of its Consumer and Life Sciences segment. The business supplies ingredients designed to improve the performance of everyday consumer products.
