Siemens launches natural hazard risk tool to boost business resilience

New capability helps businesses and homeowners strengthen resilience, ensure continuity, and enhance competitiveness

Siemens has enhanced its free, web-based Digital Business Optimizer (DBO) platform with the launch of a natural hazard risk mitigation feature. Developed in collaboration with academic partners, this new capability enables U.S. businesses to assess and benchmark the resilience of their buildings and facilities against more than 20 location-specific natural hazards—including floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and hurricanes.

The feature leverages reliable data sources such as FEMA’s National Risk Index to provide detailed, site-specific insights and recommend over 100 proven adaptation strategies. These strategies include practical measures such as installing flood barriers, reinforcing roofs, applying heat-reflective window films, and integrating solar panels with battery storage. This enables organizations to make informed decisions that protect their physical assets, maintain operations, and ensure long-term competitiveness.

“In today’s changing risk landscape, the cost of inaction is too great. This new feature helps businesses protect shareholder value, ensure business continuity, and maintain their competitive edge,” said Anthony Casciano, President & CEO of Siemens Financial Services, Inc.

Using existing facility data such as location, building type, size, and annual energy usage, the DBO tool conducts ROI-based analysis to identify key risks and generate tailored mitigation strategies. This holistic, data-driven approach enhances an organization’s ability to withstand environmental disruptions and shifting climate conditions.

Siemens developed the new feature in partnership with academic collaborators, including students from WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, as part of its Tech for Sustainability Campaign—a global initiative aimed at empowering startups, researchers, and students to tackle real-world challenges through technology.

“We are continually asking ourselves how we can expand the DBO tool to help U.S. businesses become more resilient, efficient, and competitive,” added Casciano. “In addition to natural hazard mitigation, we are currently developing a cybersecurity assessment to help companies safeguard their data and enhance resilience in the face of today’s complex threats.”
