Tata Group & OpenAI forge landmark alliance to power India’s global AI ambitions

Call it a sweeping move set to reshape India’s artificial intelligence landscape

The Tata Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and OpenAI have announced a far-reaching strategic partnership to accelerate AI transformation across enterprise, consumer, and social sectors in India and worldwide.

The multi-dimensional alliance will unlock AI-powered innovation across Tata companies, roll out joint global industry solutions, and build massive next-generation AI infrastructure in India — positioning the country as a rising global AI powerhouse.

Several thousand Tata Group employees will gain access to Enterprise ChatGPT, supercharging productivity and innovation across the conglomerate. TCS will also deploy OpenAI’s Codex to enhance software engineering performance and accelerate development cycles.

Blending OpenAI’s advanced Agentic AI capabilities with TCS’s deep industry expertise, the partners will develop tailored, sector-specific AI solutions for enterprises in India and around the world. Through joint go-to-market initiatives, TCS will help organizations deploy, integrate, and scale OpenAI’s AI platforms to drive real-world transformation.

In one of the partnership’s most ambitious components, TCS’ HyperVault unit and OpenAI have entered a multi-year agreement to develop large-scale AI infrastructure in India.

The initial phase will deliver 100MW of AI-ready capacity, with the option to scale up to a staggering 1 gigawatt. The green-energy-powered, liquid-cooled data centers will be purpose-built for hyperscalers and AI-driven enterprises — a foundational step toward cementing India’s position as a global AI hub.

Beyond enterprise transformation, the partnership carries a major social mission. The OpenAI Foundation and TCS will collaborate to deliver AI training, responsible-use resources, and technology toolkits to NGOs. The goal: improve the livelihoods of at least one million Indian youth by equipping them with practical AI skills at scale.

Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI, said, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it.”

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, said, “This deep collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era.”

TCS established HyperVault in 2025 to deliver gigawatt-scale, secure, AI-ready infrastructure for hyperscalers and AI-native enterprises.
