NTPC Green Energy Ltd. (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC, has entered into a significant joint venture (JV) with the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) to develop renewable energy projects in Andhra Pradesh. This collaboration is poised to attract an investment of Rs. 2, 00,000 crore to the state, marking a pivotal step toward enhancing energy security and sustainability.

The JV will spearhead the development of 25 GW of solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects, alongside 10 GW of pumped hydro storage projects and 0.5 MMTPA of green hydrogen and derivatives like green ammonia and methanol. The initiative is expected to generate employment for approximately 1.06 lakh people while contributing Rs. 20,620 crore in financial benefits to the state over 25 years.

At the signing ceremony held at the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu lauded the partnership as a milestone in advancing the state’s renewable energy ambitions. He reaffirmed the government's dedication to supporting clean energy initiatives such as solar, wind, pumped storage, and green hydrogen projects, emphasizing their role in fostering a pollution-free and sustainable future.

Naidu outlined a broader vision under the state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which aims to achieve 78.50 GW of solar energy, 35 GW of wind energy, 22 GW of pumped hydro storage, and 1.50 MMTPA of green hydrogen production within the next five years. He stressed that these ambitious targets are designed not only to meet the state’s energy demands but also to generate substantial revenue and establish Andhra Pradesh as a model for renewable energy development in India.

The partnership’s first phase is slated for completion by May 2027. Speaking on the occasion, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar underscored the JV’s significance in securing the energy future of Andhra Pradesh while contributing to India’s national renewable energy goals. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in creating a cleaner and greener future, which aligns with the global transition to sustainable energy systems. Special Chief Secretary for Energy, K. Vijayanand, described the JV as a model collaboration that could inspire similar initiatives in other states to address local and national energy needs sustainably.

Additionally, NGEL is advancing its green hydrogen hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of Rs. 1.85 trillion to produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen daily. NTPC is exploring partnerships with global firms like Japan's Toyo Engineering Corp., Norway’s Getek AS, and Australia’s Fortescue for the offtake of green hydrogen. This facility will operate on a plug-and-play model similar to special economic zones, offering companies the infrastructure to produce green hydrogen.
