Sulzer partners with Hyme Energy to revolutionize renewable energy storage

Both companies collaborated in the project consortium for the MOSS demonstrator plant

Building on the success of the pioneering Molten Salts Storage (MOSS) project in Denmark, Sulzer is developing advanced pumps for Hyme Energy’s patented molten hydroxide salt energy storage system. This subsequent collaboration aims to optimize and commercialize renewable energy storage using molten salts. The innovative technology will make green heat available on demand for industrial processes, supporting decarbonization and the global energy transition.

Both companies collaborated in the project consortium for the MOSS demonstrator plant, which was inaugurated in April 2024. The plant validated the concept of storing renewable energy in molten salt at temperatures up to 600°C. As a competitive, green and reliable solution for industrial heat electrification, Sulzer and Hyme Energy are now partnering to advance the technology and bring it to the market.

Benoît Martin, Advanced Engineering Manager at Sulzer, explains: “We’re working with Hyme Energy to optimize the technology, improve the competitiveness of the solution and establish a strong supply chain. Sulzer’s vertical turbine pumps play a critical role in moving the molten salt within the system, and we are focused on achieving material and technical advancements to extend service life, boost performance and add value.”

CEO and co-founder of Hyme Energy Emil Løvschall-Jensen says: “Our technology is designed to integrate with existing infrastructure, making adoption easier for industries looking to transition to sustainable energy. For us at Hyme, it is key to work with established partners like Sulzer. By combining our strengths, we can accelerate progress and bring this solution to market faster.”

Benoît concludes: “We’re always keen to leverage capabilities and collaborate on new technologies. We worked well with Hyme (sic Energy) on MOSS and are excited to partner with them again to accelerate the energy transition and help reduce industrial emissions.”
