KBR wins contracts to upgrade two European ammonia plants & cut emissions

KBR will supply technology licensing, proprietary engineering, process equipment and catalysts for the two facilities

KBR has secured contracts to revamp two major ammonia plants operated by AGF Nitrogen in Germany and Austria, with upgrades aimed at cutting natural gas consumption, boosting energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The projects will modernize AGF Nitrogen’s facilities operated through its affiliates SKWP in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, and LAT Nitrogen in Linz, Austria. The revamps are designed to strengthen plant performance, reduce operating energy requirements and advance the company’s sustainability goals while supporting Europe’s food security.

Under the contracts, KBR will supply technology licensing, proprietary engineering, process equipment and catalysts for the two facilities.

At LAT Nitrogen’s 550-metric-tonne-per-day (MTPD) ammonia plant No. 2 in Linz, Austria, KBR will provide technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, post-BED services, process equipment and catalyst supply.

At SKWP’s larger 1,900-MTPD ammonia plant No. 2 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, the scope includes technology licensing, post-BED services, process equipment and catalysts, back-end modifications and a new ammonia converter for the synthesis loop. The work builds on a proprietary engineering contract awarded to KBR in March 2026.

A key element of both projects will be the modernization of the plants’ existing steam reforming sections through KBR’s proprietary Reforming Exchange System (KRES) technology. The upgrades are expected to bring both facilities to the highest industry performance standards and position them among the most energy-efficient ammonia plants in their technology segment once completed.

The contracts underscore the growing focus on improving the efficiency of existing fertilizer production assets as Europe’s energy challenges drive demand for lower-consumption, lower-emission industrial processes.

“We are proud to build on our long-standing relationship with AGF Nitrogen and support the continued modernization of its ammonia assets,” said Jay Ibrahim, President, KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions.

“These awards demonstrate how KBR’s deep ammonia expertise and differentiated technologies can help customers improve the efficiency and performance of existing plants while reducing their carbon footprint. By combining proven ammonia technology with our energy transition capabilities, we are helping customers operate more efficiently while creating long-term value from existing assets.”

The company said its tailored revamp solutions and physics-enabled artificial intelligence (AI) technologies help operators improve efficiency, reliability and sustainability, reduce emissions and maximize the long-term value of existing assets.
